Designed as both an artist’s studio and an intimate gallery space, this custom ADU in San Rafael reflects a thoughtful balance of creativity, functionality, and personal expression. Working closely with the homeowner, the G Family design-build team developed a warm, inviting environment that celebrates her artistic vision and appreciation for color, natural materials, and handcrafted details. The kitchen features rich Hale Navy cabinetry complemented by custom walnut shelving, a walnut hood, and warm brass accents. Soft blush walls introduce an unexpected layer of color, creating a distinctive palette that feels both expressive and welcoming. In the bathroom, natural limestone, textured tile, and a walnut vanity continue the material story, bringing warmth and cohesion throughout the space. One of the project’s most personal details is the fireplace surround, which incorporates the homeowner’s own hand-painted ceramic tiles alongside classic white tile. This custom feature creates a meaningful focal point that connects the architecture to the artist who uses it. From the carefully curated finishes to the integration of the homeowner’s artwork, every element was designed to support her creative pursuits while reflecting her individual style. The result is a one-of-a-kind space that feels as personal as the art it was created to showcase.
